Peter Beste "Sogndal" Photograph, 2008

Peter Beste is a documentary photographer based in Oregon.

In the last several decades, a music subculture called Black Metal has emerged in Norway. Its roots stem from the heady blend of horror movies, heavy metal music, paganism, and youthful angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as a revolt frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against the mainstream, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of society.

American documentary photographer Peter Beste spent eight years working in this insulated and secretive community. Beste's access and insight has been absolutely without precedent, resulting in an amazing photographic journey.
